Good policy, not just good intentions
What good will it do you if you send your friends to Concord, when they introduce an income tax and your tax bills keep growing every year? And they will tax and regulate you into oblivion with the best of intentions… reminding me of this C. S. Lewis quote:
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
Elections should be decided based on the policies of the candidates, not just their good intentions. Instead of detailing their policy proposals though, many candidates hide behind talking points, spout empty word salads, or say nothing altogether.
Incumbents can be evaluated based on what they did in previous terms - they will likely act the same way if re-elected. Trusting someone who supported certain policies but promises they will do things differently next term is… optimistic.
With first time candidates (like I was last time) a history of public service helps. I served on the School Board, and was the town Finance Director - not the same position, but still, a solid starting point in evaluating me.
Lacking that, one hopes candidates will at least try to discuss their proposed policies.
And the toughest challenge is dealing with candidates that say nothing, hoping that you will vote for them because they spent $2 to register to run and have the “correct” letter by their name.
With me, you get a decade-long track record of public service, and a proven history of communicating clearly not just during election cycles, but during my entire term. I will continue to do the same if re-elected, so you know what policies I am supporting and why.
The election is next week - on November 5, I will vote Republican at every level of the ballot, because any Republican candidate is going to support much better policies than any Democratic candidate, and elections are all about policy. Please join me in voting Republican so we can preserve our freedoms, avoid an income tax, and keep our state’s economy going strong, like it has under multiple terms of Republican state leadership.
