Income Taxes: Make New Hampshire into Connecticut! - April 2026, The Evergreen
Income Taxes - Make New Hampshire into Connecticut!
For decades, Democrats got elected by pretending they don’t support an income tax, planning to increase government spending to unsustainable levels to justify “reluctantly” introducing an income tax to pay for their “essential” expenditures.
They got close to completing that plan when they last had full political control (2009-2010), but fortunately the voters returned the NH Legislature to the Republicans, and since the ensuing billion dollar state budget cut, New Hampshire saw the fastest economic growth in the Northeast.
That political discipline is eroding, and progressives are again talking about introducing income taxes. So let’s give a tip of the hat to Andru Volinsky for publicly introducing an income tax/state property tax plan claimed to increase school funding while also lowering property taxes (as if).
While his unusual honesty is refreshing, the proposed policy is disastrous.
Connecticut is the last state to introduce an income tax (in 1991), turning it from a tax haven for people looking to escape New York’s oppressive taxation into another overtaxed Democratic state.
CT introduced an income tax to lower property taxes. But a state with a shiny new tax is amazingly good at finding new ways to spend MUCH more. And once the state inevitably needs extra cash, they can increase even more taxes than before… just like Connecticut did since 1991, promises to the contrary be damned.
Today, CT has the third highest property taxes in the US, behind only NJ and IL. New Hampshire is 6th… which may sound bad, but only until remembering that NH has no income or sales tax, while Connecticut’s progressive income tax maxes at 6.99% and their sales tax is 6.35%.
Volinsky’s press conference was followed by damage control statements from the beleaguered Democratic leadership, trying to walk a fine line by pretending to disagree with income taxes while leaving the door open for them so their progressive representatives would not publicly revolt.
This awkward dance culminated with last week’s floor fight over CACR 10 (a proposed constitutional amendment that would have banned income taxes), which the Democrats killed. Nothing says “we oppose income taxes” like preventing the people of New Hampshire from voting on banning income taxes, right? Please visit https://noincometaxnh.com/ for more information.
My favorite 2026 moment is the point of personal privilege (right after the CACR 10 debate) brought by a progressive representative who wanted to ensure that everyone knew they never opposed an income tax. Duly noted :)
Income taxes do not reduce property taxes - they just hurt our economy and greatly increase government spending. By electing a Republican Governor, Senators and Representatives, you can continue to keep government spending under control, and enjoy the New Hampshire Advantage instead of watching New Hampshire become yet another Democratic failure like Connecticut.
