Legislative Update: One day in the life of a State Representative

Elections are close, and we are all bombarded with mailers, email, texts, digital ads, etc. So why not share an informational letter instead? Here is how I spent my day in Concord this Tuesday:

At 10am, I met with some Republican representatives to review state budget developments. Our revenues and expenditures keep shifting during the term, so staying on top of recent developments is essential.

Next, I met with the Office of Legislative Services (OLS). My September Legislative Service Request (LSR) language needed to be modified, so I sat down with the OLS staff attorney assigned to my bill to go over the needed changes.

After grabbing a quick lunch at the Capitol cafeteria, I met with OLS Research. This Monday, I became aware of a significant issue that makes it very hard for patients to compare prices on prescriptions or medical services recommended during medical appointments, and I am preparing to introduce legislation to address that. 

To do a good job, I need the support of our staff researchers - they will be helping me understand our existing legislation on the topic (if any exists), look at other states that may have already passed laws to address similar issues, etc. Their assistance was hugely useful during my first term, and their help will make any bill language I propose better from the start.

My next meeting was with a budget analyst from the Office of the Legislative Budget Assistant, to go over financial details on the budget of the Fish and Game Department in preparation for my 3pm committee meeting. Our staff has a deep, thorough understanding of our state agency budgets and are always happy to share their expertise.

That 3pm meeting was for the Fish and Game Study Committee on Funding and Partnerships - a joint Senate/House statutory committee created by SB542. Long story short, Fish and Game is asking for a major change in their funding (looking to move away from just being funded by their users), and I was assigned to this committee as a member of Finance.

While funding changes can only be recommended by going through the full budget process this spring (and if reelected on November 5, I will be one of the 8 people working on the Fish and Game budget), the committee already identified some creative solutions that should increase the agency revenues if implemented, and the information reviewed this fall will get us a great head start on their budget.

And as I was heading out, I bumped into a representative I was looking to talk to about a bill I am working on, and we were able to make some solid progress on that matter before I finally went home. Gathering bipartisan support for bills is a year round job - there are 400 state representatives, after all.
