Only 4 Republicans on the District 17 ballot

Last week’s newspaper brought a rather unexpected letter to the editor from Alan Carpenter which needs to be addressed.

I respect him personally and respect his right to identify himself as a Republican, but Republicans who seek state office run as Republicans and go through the primary election to be on the general election ticket. 

Mr. Carpenter chose to bypass the Republican primary election by running as an Independent, and his June 16th letter to the editor to the Windham Independent makes it clear why: “the only way for me to go to Concord and carry forward your voice in 2022 would be as an independent candidate”. 

Skipping a tough contested primary and going directly to the general election is his prerogative, but one simply cannot have it both ways by running as an Independent while claiming to really be a Republican - he chose to leave the Republican Party, and we all need to respect this choice and stop referring to him as a Republican.

Also…  given that his June 23 gun control letter to the editor sounds like it was written by Nancy Pelosi, I am not surprised that so many Windham residents consider him to be an Independent that is much closer to a Democrat than a Republican. That letter supports gun control in the form of waiting periods, age limits, red flag laws, mandatory training, storage laws, mental health restrictions and banning specific weapons, and makes it clear that he is open to other forms of anti firearm legislation.

Mr. Carpenter on Oct. 13: “ If you are willing to require a historically violent individual to wait a few days before acquiring their first handgun, you must not be a Republican”

Mr. Carpenter on June 23: “ Waiting Periods: To be clear, the person who can’t wait three, or even ten days to buy a handgun is exactly the person I do NOT want to buy a handgun today.”

The bold portions of his Oct. 13 statement are nowhere to be found in the detailed public position he took on June 23, when he made it crystal clear that nobody should be able to ever purchase a handgun without a waiting period, no matter whether they are squeaky clean or not, or whether this is their first handgun purchase or not. I will stick to just stating the facts rather than speculate as to why this significant inconsistency happened. 

There are only 4 Windham Republicans on the November 8 District 17 ballot -  I am asking for your support for the entire Republican ticket so we can keep protecting the New Hampshire Advantage.
