The Second Amendment Protects Everyone
When I lived in Massachusetts, I used to see fearmongering government press releases describing confiscating a couple of rifles and a few boxes of ammunition as removing an arsenal off the streets, saving hundreds of lives in the process. Such photo ops are just as ridiculous as implying that someone legally possessing "a weapon and dozens of rounds of ammunition" proves they were dangerous.
Millions of citizens that lawfully carry concealed meet that exact description, and it is wrong to imply that just legally carrying a weapon (concealed or openly) is evidence of an intent to harm others.
Similar statements from other federal officials were equally misguided:
“I've been to a protest -- guess what? I didn't bring a gun. I brought a billboard”. Bringing a gun to a public protest is protected by the 2nd amendment.
“You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want. It's that simple. You don't have a right to break the law." Bringing a lawfully possessed, loaded firearm to a protest is legal.
“If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you.". Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) addressed this nonsense best: "Carrying a firearm is not a death sentence, it's a Constitutionally protected God-given right, and if you don't understand this you have no business in law enforcement or government".
Force used by law enforcement must be reasonable. Here is the relevant part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy on use of deadly force by Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs), Issue Date: September 7, 2018, Policy Statement 044-05:
“A DHS LEO may use deadly force only when the LEO has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the LEO or to another person.”.
There is no US judge or jury that would agree that someone lawfully possessing a firearm is ALL that’s needed to justify the use of deadly force. The federal government must conduct a proper investigation, and share the relevant evidence. And they may want to stop defending the current ban on firearm possession by people convicted of non-violent felonies, or the even more absurd ban on firearms possession by cannabis consumers.
New Hampshire understands that the 2nd amendment applies to everyone, not just to people we like, which is why we are one of the safest states in the country. I strongly disagree with the anti constitutional rhetoric above, and will continue to protect our rights, including their 2nd amendment rights.
